Recent books with Old Chiswick connections

Inglis. J.R. and Sanders J (2015) Panorama of the Thames: a riverside view of Georgian London. Thames and Hudson. This View of Georgian London is based on a 60ft long, hand coloured, tourist guide published in 1829 by London bookseller Samuel Leigh. Information for some of the modern annotations for Chiswick Reach were supplied by OCPS based on Humphrey Arthure's book described under OCPS Publications.

Craigmyle, Anthea (2013) A Vicarage in the Blitz. This comprises a collection of lively and humorous letters written throughout the Second World War from Molly Rich, the wife of the Vicar of St Nicholas’ Church in Old Chiswick, to Otto, a young Austrian Jewish refugee. The boy had fled the Nazis and became a much-loved member of her family, but was deported for internment in Australia. Molly’s warm, loving letters sustained Otto through grim times, even as she and her family, with a house full of refugees and evacuees, endured wartime London. The book is illustrated with drawings by Molly’s daughter, Anthea Craigmyle. It is available at the Chiswick Library and to buy locally.

Nissen, Alice (2013) Past Images of Chiswick Mall and its neighbourhood (68 pages). Old Chiswick is brought alive in photographs, drawings, paintings and maps showing the Mall and its surroundings from the early 19th century to the present day, with notes and reminiscences by Alice Nissen, who was brought up on Chiswick Mall and lived there until 2013, and whose mother was born on the Mall. It is available from Alice Nissen for £27.50 + £2.70 postage: via this email address.

Bartram, Dorothy (2012) Memories of Chiswick Hospital. With the assistance of the local history group at Chiswick Library, Dorothy has written a book about her memories about this Hospital. She worked for the Matron when it was a Maternity Hospital, continued as the Warden when it became Chiswick Lodge, home for the elderly. She was awarded the League of Mercy medal for her charity work. The building on Chiswick Mall was demolished in 2009 and Riverside Lodge (1-3) built on the site. OCPS ensured the Foundation Stone for the Hospital was incorporated into the front garden wall. Copies of the book are available for £10 from Dorothy at this email address.

Munro, Alan (2012) Keep the Flag flying: a diplomatic memoir. Gilgamesh. Sir Alan Munro, the Society President and active Committee member for many years, has published this book about his career in the Diplomatic Service.
